Why project MCP servers need approval before they run, and how agentty's content-hash trust keeps a cloned repo from executing code on your machine.

The problem in one sentence

A plugin is just an entry in an mcp.json file that tells agentty to spawn a command — and that file can arrive inside a git repo you cloned, so "connect to the plugins this repo declares" would mean "run whatever command a stranger put in that file, the moment you open their project."

Trust is the mechanism that stops that. This page explains what it does, why it works the way it does, and how you use it.

Why plugins are different from other config

Most things a repo can carry are inert — a .md command, a skill file, a config value. Worst case, agentty reads them.

An stdio MCP server is a command line. When agentty "connects" to it, it literally runs that program (e.g. node some-server.js, /opt/db-mcp, npx -y @evil/mcp). Unlike a bash tool call — which goes through agentty's permission prompt and sandbox — a plugin spawns at startup with no per-call prompt. So an untrusted plugin is a straight path to arbitrary code execution on your machine.

That's why plugins get a gate that ordinary config doesn't.

Who's trusted, and who isn't

agentty reads MCP config from two places:

  • User~/.agentty/mcp.json. You put this here yourself. Always trusted.
  • Project<repo>/.agentty/mcp.json. This can ride in on a clone. Untrusted until you say otherwise.

(An explicit $AGENTTY_MCP_CONFIG file is also treated as user-placed, so it's trusted too.)

The rule is simply: did a human on this machine choose this file, or did it come with the repo? User config = you chose it. Project config = prove it.

Remote HTTP/SSE servers (a url, no command) spawn no local process, so they aren't gated — there's nothing to execute.

How you grant trust

An untrusted project server shows up — you can see exactly what a repo declares — but it won't connect. In the Plugins picker (Ctrl+K → Plugins) it's labelled:

Press Enter on it (the row reads trust & enable) to approve it and connect. Headless / scripted? The CLI does the same:

There's also a blanket escape hatch — AGENTTY_MCP_ALLOW_PROJECT=1 trusts every server in the project config at once. Handy for a repo you fully control; not what you want for one you just cloned.

What "approval" actually records — and why it's a hash

Here's the part that isn't obvious. When you approve a server, agentty does not just remember "the server named db is OK." It records a content hash — a fingerprint of the exact command + args that server would run — into a file under your home directory:

Two consequences fall out of that design, and they're the whole point:

1. A cloned repo can't approve itself. The approvals live in your ~/.agentty, which a repo can't write to. A repo can ship an mcp.json, but it can't ship the approval — that decision is always yours, made on your machine.

2. Changing the command voids the approval. Trust is bound to the fingerprint of the command, not to the server's name. So if you approve:

…and later the file is edited — say a git pull swaps it to:

…the fingerprint no longer matches the one you approved. The server is automatically back to untrusted, and won't run until you approve the new command. The name db is unchanged, but the trust isn't fooled.

That second property is the important one. It's the fix for a real class of attack (known as MCPoison, CVE-2025-54136) where a tool trusted an MCP server by its name: approve a harmless-looking server once, then silently swap the command underneath the same name, and it keeps running with no re-prompt. Binding trust to the command's content instead of its name closes that door.

Per-server, not per-file

Trust is granted one server at a time. Approving alpha does not bless beta. Three practical consequences:

  • If a repo's mcp.json has three servers, you approve each one you want — you're never forced to trust the whole file to run one server.
  • If someone adds a new server to the file later, it starts untrusted even though the servers you already approved stay trusted. A new server can't sneak in behind an approved one.
  • Editing one server's command re-gates only that server; the others keep their trust.

(The whole-file AGENTTY_MCP_ALLOW_PROJECT=1 and an older whole-file approval both still work as blanket grants — they just trust everything at once instead of server-by-server.)

The lifecycle, start to finish

  1. You clone a repo that ships .agentty/mcp.json with a db server.
  2. You open agentty in it. db appears in the Plugins picker, marked untrusted — nothing has run.
  3. You inspect what it wants to spawn, decide it's fine, press Enter (trust & enable).
  4. agentty fingerprints db's command, saves the hash to ~/.agentty/mcp_approvals.json, and connects it. Its tools are now available to the model.
  5. Weeks later a git pull changes db's command. On next launch the fingerprint mismatches → db is untrusted again → you review and re-approve (or don't).

At no point does code from the repo run without a deliberate keypress from you, and no past approval survives a change to what it was approving.

A repo can also ship agent personas in .agentty/agents/*.md — a file whose body becomes a subagent's system prompt. That's untrusted content from a clone too, but it's a different risk than a plugin, and it gets a different response.

A plugin names a command to run, and spawns it outside the tool gate — that's why it needs a hard approval. An agent persona names no command; it's a prompt plus a tool allowlist that can only ever narrow what the agent may do (it can't grant capability your session doesn't already have). When that subagent calls bash or edit, those go through the same permission profile and sandbox as everything else. So the sandbox already covers the execution path — the residual risk is prompt injection (a repo steering an agent with gated-but-real tools), not code execution.

Because the risk is lower and already mediated, agentty's response is transparency, not a gate: a project-defined agent simply shows a quiet project agent tag on its task card, so an injected persona is never invisible. It runs without an approval step — over-gating a low-risk surface would just train reflexive "approve" clicks and dull the gate that matters (plugins). Built-in agents and your own ~/.agentty/agents show no tag.
